The waterfalls are 170 to 180 feet tall, however Horseshoe Falls is more than twice as wide as American Falls. When at the American side of the falls, you will land at Niagara Falls State Park, stop at the Visitor Center to get the lay of the land. From that point you can visit the Observation Tower, head over to Discovery Center and the Niagara Aquarium, walk or drive onto Goat Island or purchase a ticket for one of the brave voyages through the falls. Anybody hoping to find a workable pace individual with the deafening falls should make the excursion to the Cave of the Winds. The falls are amazing to such an extent that approaching the Hurricane Deck resembles encountering a typhoon.

There’s no shortage of convenience foods in American grocery stores, and cooking a meal or two per day in the microwave at your hotel will save major money over time, especially when you factor in the American tipping system.

  • Avoid paid parking at all costs

Parking is crazy expensive in some cities. Use public transportation when possible. If you need to park on the street a few blocks away from your destination to avoid paying for parking, do it!

  • Research city passes

Once you’ve decided which cities to travel to in the US, research city passes. Most major cities have some form of city passes that cover admission to several attractions as a discounted bundle. These aren’t always a good deal so do you’ll need to do some research, but sometimes this can save you quite a bit of money.

  • Redeem hotel points

Be sure to sign up for hotel credit cards before you go and use those points when you travel. This is especially helpful in big cities. Be aware that most hotels charge parking fees if you have a car, and adjust your budget accordingly.

  • City tourism cards

City tourism cards allow you to see a large number of attractions (and often include free public transportation) for one low price, usually $30–40. They provide free access to museums, reduced access to attractions, and restaurant discounts.

  • Get free water or free refills

If you order a drink, most restaurants allow free refills while you eat your meal or refills at a low cost. If you ask, water is usually provided free.
