Amit Shah, making a historic statement in Rajya Sabha today, said: “I am presenting the resolution to revoke Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir except the first clause 370 (1).”

The centre has decided to abrogate Article 370 and Article 35-A of the constitutions which accords notable status to the state. Home Minister, Amit Shah has also decided to bifurcate the state in two Union Territories. One with a legislature like Delhi and Puducherry (Jammu and Kashmir) and another without a legislature like Chandigarh (Ladakh).

This announcement has come at that time when the current situation in Jammu and Kashmir is on the verge. This amendment will lead to an uproar in the country.

This announcement ushered to strong protests from the leader of Indian National Congress, TMC, DMK, AAP, and NCP. Rajya Sabha experienced clamoured slogans today. These parties continued with their protest till the end of the sabha.

However, this announcement was supported by regional parties such as BSP, BJD, TRS and AIADMK.

Amit Shah was encouraged for his announcement and received a standing ovation from his colleagues. “Article 370 has not allowed integration of Jammu and Kashmir with the country”, Amit Shah addressed today.

The decision of the Union Territory of Ladakh was a prolonged demand by the people of the region and the decision was taken to fulfil the aspirations of the localists of that area.

Two representatives of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Nazeer Ahmed and Mir Mohammad Fayaz were pushed out of the RS after they tore their clothes and removed the hard copies of the constitutions.

Mehbooba Mufti, PDP leader,  tweeted that today is the darkest day in Indian Democracy.

“We are adopting the same path as adopted by the Congress in 1952 and 1962 by amending the provisions of Article 370 the same way through a notification” Shah told RS when Ram Gopal Yadav, SP, raised a question to know if the constitution can be altered without a constitutional amendment. Seems like BJP did its homework quite well.

Shah also said, “there is no advantage in the opposition stand. They are opposing it only to do politics and are creating cacophony inside the House.

This announcement was made after a cabinet meeting chaired by the Prime Minister where Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval had a discussion on the similar lines.

Section 144, which prohibits the assembly of four people, still prevails in Jammu and Kashmir
