With Congress President Rahul Gandhi proceeding to demand on quitting as party chief, the senior party leadership is thinking about a few options, including a praesidium of leaders running the party’s everyday undertakings. Sources said the Congress constitution does not accommodate a praesidium. Congress would need to call its plenary session to change the constitution.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is firm on his decision to stop from the post of party president. The Congress is probably going to hold another gathering of its Working Committee this week to examine potential contender for the post because of Congress crisis is expanding.
Rahul on Monday refused to meet a delegation of MPs, who had planned to convince him to change his choice. Rahul had declared his choice to quit at the meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) on Saturday, says sources.
Since Saturday’s Congress Working Committee meeting in which Rahul Gandhi offered his resignation, top Congress pioneers have been endeavouring to persuade him to remain in the post.
Rahul met senior party pioneers Ahmed Patel and KC Venugopal and passed on to them that the party should elect a non-Gandhi family individually as its leader. Rahul from now on wants to concentrate on venturing to every part of the nation, raising peoples’ issues inside as well as outside Parliament, says party sources.
Congress chief Rahul Gandhi had a progression of visitors on Tuesday with his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra just as Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot met him at his Tughlaq Lane home midst of thundering of discontent in the state and his emphasis on quitting.
Sources also said a non-Gandhi family successor to Rahul could extend the crisis situation since the party leadership was probably not going to achieve an agreement on one single name. However, a segment of the party thinks that establishing a praesidium of leaders, involving a blend of the youthful and the old, could be the way forward. In a press meeting, Congress main spokesperson, Randeep Singh Surjewala mentioned: “everyone, including the media, to not fall into the trap of conjectures or speculations and await the calibrated efforts by the Congress party towards a future course of action.” Surjewala also appealed to all, including the media, to “respect the sanctity of a closed-door meeting of the CWC.” “Various conjectures, speculations, insinuations, assumptions, gossip and rumour mongering in a section of the media is uncalled for and unwarranted.” Various allegations have also been placed on Rahul Gandhi before.
This resignations process of the state Congress chiefs continued on Monday. Along with party chief Rahul Gandhi resigning from the posts, Punjab, Jharkhand Congress unit chiefs Sunil Jakhar and Ajoy Kumar also did quit their posts on Monday. Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot also met Venugopal and Patel.
Even after repeated requests to meet, Rahul Gandhi did not meet a delegation of MPs which leads to congress crisis. While he did so he tweeted on Monday morning remembering the country’s first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, on his death anniversary and also attended a prayer meeting in Nehru’s memory.
Lalu Prasad Yadav
Lalu Prasad Yadav, Rashtriya Janata Dal President mentioned that Congress President Rahul Gandhi’s offer to step down from the post will be suicidal for the party, and the social and political forces battling the Sangh Parivar. Lalu Prasad also added by saying that if the Congress makes a non-Gandhi the party president, they will be accused of being a “puppet” of the Gandhi family. Lalu Prasad also said, “Why should Rahul give such an opportunity to his political detractors?” Lalu Prasad thinks that the opposition should have collectively projected Rahul Gandhi as their PM candidate. By saying so he stated, “There was nothing wrong for the regional parties to bargain for more seats but they should not have done the strategic blunder of not projecting someone who has a national perspective as the Prime Minister candidate.”
Bollywood also had a take on Rahul Gandhi’s resignation. Superstar Rajinikanth said, “Rahul Gandhi does not lack leadership quality. He should prove he can do it. He should not resign and rather stand firmly. In a democracy, if the ruling party is important, so is the Opposition party. It is difficult to handle the Congress party. It is an old party and senior most people are there. So, as a youngster, it is difficult for him to handle senior most people. In my observation, the senior Congresspeople are not co-operative and have not worked hard.”
The Congress party meeting was held in the backdrop of the Congress winning just 52 Lok Sabha seats and drawing nought in 18 states and Union Territories. Part President, Rahul Gandhi himself lost from the family bastion of Amethi in Uttar Pradesh.
