Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury is proposed as the chairman of the Public Accounts Committee by the Congress Parliamentary Party. He is proposed to the government and the speakers to be their Lok Sabha floor leader. This decision was taken after CPP executive Sonia Gandhi picked Chowdhury for the post during their internal discussion.
Traditionally, PAC chairman’s post goes to the main opposition. The Speaker will make a formal announcement in consultation with the government and opposition leaders. The Congress had chairmanships of three House committees attached to the Lok Sabha in the previous Lok Sabha and has asked for the same — chairmanship of the standing committees on finance and external affairs. It has proposed Shashi Tharoor as chairman of the House panel on external affairs. The government and the Speaker will take a final call depending on the demands of other parties. As of Monday evening, various parties have sent 23 names, including BJD’s Bhartruhari Mahtab. If nominations don’t come down to 15 by withdrawal time, elections may be held.

Though Rahul Gandhi has been occupying the seat next to Sonia Gandhi in the first row of opposition benches at the beginning of the session, as per formal allocation of seats communicated by the Speaker’s office, he could move back to the second row seat which he had occupied in the last Lok Sabha. Sources said, the Congress has been allotted two seats in the first row of opposition benches and TR Balu of DMK, the second largest opposition party, will occupy the third seat next to Sonia Gandhi and Chowdhury in the front row. Along with Trinamool and YSRCP floor leaders, SP leader Mulayam Singh Yadav and NC leader Farooq Abdullah may also get front row seats given the seniority of the ex-chief ministers.
