20 Years of Kargil War: Here’s what you need to know!

The Kargil War, known as ‘Operation Vijay’ in Indian Army whereas ‘Operation Safed Sagar’ in Indian Air Force, has been among the fiercest of wars in the history of India.

This year is remarkable as this year marks the 20th anniversary of the Kargil War.

We have listed down a few facts related to the Kargil War that we all must know by heart as Indians.

When and Where?

  1. As the name reveals, the war took place in the town of Kargil, which is one of the districts Jammu and Kashmir.
  2. The war began in May 1999 and continued till July 1999.

What’s so special about Kargil and the Kargil War?

  1. Kargil used to be the part of Baltistan district (Ladakh) before the partition of India 1947.  
  2. It was separated by the LOC after the first Kashmir War (1947-1948).
  3. The war was fought for 40 days under the temperature of minus 10 degrees.
  4. It was the first ever war to be livestreamed on Indian televisions.

Why this happened?

  1. This war began with the infiltration of Pakistani troops and terrorists into Indian Army’s arena.  
  2. Pakistan’s primary objective was to cut all types of connections between Ladakh and Kashmir. They wanted to capture Indian territory by elevating tensions at Indian borders.
  3. As we all know that Pakistan has been dreaming for Kashmir since ages. During 1999, Pakistan attempted to bring Kashmir issue on the international level so that their positions in Kashmir can be leveraged. However, their habit of losing prevailed and they lost again!

How this happened?

  1. Pakistani troops adopted an extremely shrewd strategy by positioning themselves at the higher points of the mountains of Kargil.
  2. Despite the fact that Pakistan was able to shoot down two Indian fighter jets, the Indian Air Force made effective use of MiG-27 and MiG-29 against Pakistani Forces.
  3. Several troops of Pakistani soldiers were killed by Mirage 2000 (A multirole combat aircraft).

We, India, won this war at a very high price. We lost 527 precious lives within the span of just 2.5 months. Nevertheless, it brought out the best in Indian soldiers. Captain Manoj Kumar Pandey, Captain Vikram Batra, Subedar Major Yogender Singh Yadav and, Rifleman Sanjay Kumar received the eminent Param Veer Chakra for victorious conquer of the peak in Kargil.
